Subject 06

The Future

Not a prediction. A description of a condition that is already load-bearing, and the small number of things that will still be true inside it.

01The Future

This is not forecasting

Predictions about this subject have a poor record and a predictable shape: a confident date, a graph, and a moral. This page declines all three. What follows is a description of a condition — one that does not require any further technical development to be true, because most of it is already true and merely unevenly distributed.

The condition: competence is abundant, attention is not, and every institution we have was built on the opposite assumption.

Everything downstream of scarcity is now unsupported, and almost everything is downstream of scarcity.

02The Future

Four things that follow whether or not anyone intends them

Verification becomes the scarce good. When any artefact can be produced instantly and convincingly, the artefact stops carrying information about its origin. Value migrates from the object to its provenance — from what is this to who spent what on it. Expect the returns to presence, live participation, and traceable human history to rise for reasons that have nothing to do with nostalgia.

Judgement outranks production. Producing was the bottleneck for the whole of human history, so we organised education, careers and status around it. The bottleneck has moved to deciding what is worth producing and what standard applies. That skill is currently taught almost nowhere and is difficult to demonstrate.

The middle of every distribution empties. Competent-but-unremarkable work is exactly what abundant systems produce best. What remains viable is either irreducibly specific and human, or fully automated. The comfortable centre — solid, professional, replicable — is the part that goes.

Meaning becomes an active practice rather than a by-product. Scarcity used to supply meaning as a side effect of necessity: the work had to be done, so doing it mattered. Nothing supplies it automatically now. It has to be constructed deliberately, by individuals, without institutional support, which is a skill nobody was trained in.

None of the four requires a single further capability improvement.
03The Future

Two comforts that will not hold

The first is there will always be things only humans can do. As a claim about capability, this has been wrong every time it has been made, at increasingly short intervals, and each retreat has been to a smaller room. It is not wrong because humans are unimpressive; it is wrong because it is a claim about a moving frontier and the frontier has only ever moved one way.

The second is people will always prefer the human version. Sometimes true, often not, and the exceptions are not where anyone expects. People prefer the human version when they can perceive the cost. Where cost is invisible, preference tracks quality and convenience — which is to say, it tracks away from us.

What survives is not a category of work. It is a property of certain acts: that a specific mortal spent something irreplaceable, and that this can be perceived. That property is narrow, non-scalable, mostly non-commercial, and durable.

04The Future

The honest position

Something genuinely is being lost, and it is not sentimental to say so. A great deal of human dignity was organised around being needed for our capability, and that organisation is failing. There is no version of this essay in which that turns out to be fine because of an unexpected upside.

And: the thing that made human life meaningful was never our capability. It was that our attention costs us something. That fact is untouched — not preserved by anyone, not defended by any policy, simply structurally unavailable to anything that does not run out of time.

Both statements are true at once. Refusing to hold them together produces either despair or denial, and this record is an attempt at neither.

The question is no longer what we can do. It is what we will choose to spend ourselves on, now that nothing requires it.

There is no arrival in this story and no resolution. There is only the condition, and the fact that you are inside it, and the fact that you are still choosing.
